15 New Dog Products We Saw (and Loved!) at Global Pet Expo 2019

Millennials love dogs. That was clearly a significant finding in the American Pet Products Association (APPA) Pet Owners Survey 2019-2020, which I highlighted in this recent article that recapped my experience at Global Pet Expo 2019.

We know that millennials are the largest demographic of dog owners—but other generations love four-legged friends, too. Here is how dog ownership breaks down by percentage within each generation:

  • 82 percent of millennials own a dog
  • 81 percent of Gen Z own a dog
  • 74 percent of Gen X own a dog
  • 67 percent of Baby Boomers own a dog

Here are some additional dog highlights from that APPA survey:

  • 50 percent of U.S. households have a dog
  • That translates to 63.4 million U.S. households with a dog
  • Households with a dog have, on average, two dogs at home (I rounded up that stat since it came in at 1.53 dogs per household—and it creeps me out to consider a partial dog)
  • Of those owning a pet, on average dog owners have had a pet for 16 years

Dog owners love to shower their dogs with treats and presents. In fact, 73 percent of dog owners say that they buy their dog a gift regularly. The top times during a dog's year when they're buying gifts? Christmas (40 percent) and the dog's birthday (31 percent). Sometimes dog owners buy themselves a pet-themed gift, but not very often—fewer than two in 10 dog owners buy themselves pet-themed merchandise.
