I have a 1-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Woody, who communicates with his mouth. He will snip at your for attention, he loves to play bite, and most of the time he's very gentle, but when he gets mad, he will bite.Woody is very smart and has respo...

First, I would recommend that you neuter Woody if you haven't already. Neutered dogs are less likely to bite due to arousal which happens quite frequently in intact males. Also, dogs will try to control interacting with the person they are with by using their mouths, but you want to discourage this behavior. I would make sure that Woody is getting plenty of exercise to calm any kind of frustration he could be feeling and then limit rough play with him and yourselves. If he does try to nip, you should redirect this behavior onto appropriate toys and also work with him on obedience and impulse control. Sometimes, contacting a professional to work with you and your dog is needed. I would definitely suggest this if the behavior continues. Any kind of biting should always be taken seriously.
