Ancestry’s New Pet DNA Kit Identifies Key Genetic Health Risks

This will help dog parents come up with a preventative health plan.

We dog parents love our fur babies more than anything, and we always want to keep them as happy and healthy as possible. If you could find out what health conditions your dog might be predisposed to just by taking a simple cheek swab, wouldn't we all want to know?

Today, October 1, Ancestry is launching a new Know Your Pet DNA test that provides information about future health issues dogs could face based on their unique genetic makeup.

From the press release: The release of the Know Your Pet DNA Breeds & Health kit - which includes results from more than 200 genetic screenings of health conditions for dogs - comes in partnership with Dutch, the leading veterinary telemedicine service. Customers can get results about the health information hidden in their dog’s DNA - verified by the licensed experts at Dutch - then develop a preventative care plan with Dutch’s trained vets using the free month of consultations included with each kit.

The Know Your Pet DNA Breeds & Health kit is developed by Ancestry, the makers of the most scientifically advanced DNA test for dog breeds on the market that analyzes twice the amount of a dog's genetic data compared to other dog DNA kits. With this new at-home test, customers can:

  • NEW! Gain insights into health conditions their dog may be predisposed to with results from more than 200 genetic screenings, such as epilepsy, hip dysplasia, and the Multidrug Resistance 1 (MDR1) drug sensitivity gene that can place dogs at risk of complications after taking particular medications at specific doses.
  • Discover the precise breakdown of their dog's breed(s) from a reference panel including over 400 different breeds from all over the world.
  • Understand their pup better with detailed insights into 30 behavioral and physical traits based on their genetic makeup — like their likelihood to have separation anxiety when they are left alone, their stress in veterinary situations, willingness to share with other dogs, noise sensitivities, and more.
  • Uncover close genetic matches to other dogs in our extensive dog database and dogs with similar breed mixes in their local areas.

Brian Donnelly, Ancestry Chief Commercial Officer, says, "Ancestry is passionate about family, and for myself and so many of our customers, pets are an integral part of the family. Building on the early success of Know Your Pet DNA, we’re expanding our dog DNA testing capabilities to include hundreds of screenings for health conditions that will help our customers better understand and care for their dogs. Furthermore, through our first-of-its-kind partnership with Dutch - a pioneer in veterinary telehealth services - customers can build a personalized care plan based on their dog’s results with a trained veterinarian at no extra cost.”

New customers can buy a Know Your Pet DNA Breeds & Health kit at PetDNA.Ancestry.com. Users who have already done a Know Your Pet DNA test can upgrade their dog’s results to include Health insights for just $40 through Oct. 14.
