Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral

Marilyn: Are all things–other than man-made ones–either animal, vegetable, or mineral?

Marilyn responds:

Yes, though we could quibble about “things” such as viruses and light. In addition, even man-made things–examples are polyester clothing and pharmaceuticals–are included in the three categories. (Many are in more than one category.)

The terms “synthetic” and “artificial” imply that man-made substances constitute a fourth category, but this is not correct. Everything we make comes from something else, and all of it was on planet Earth long before we were.
