Cat Recognizes Late Mom's Voice and Shares Emotional Moment with Human Sister
Losing a pet is never easy; in most cases, we carry that loss for the rest of our lives. They were our best friend, and not having them around anymore creates a sad, awkward void.
The reverse is also true: if our pets survive us, they'll miss us, too. Recently, after her mom's passing, a woman had to bring her beloved cat back to live with her. When she started playing a video of her mom, the cat could hardly handle it:
While I'm grateful that @thehonestmessylife shared this video, I'm also a little mad. Fridays are not supposed to be for crying. Crying before noon is the worst!
The kitty's name is Dior, and she used to belong to OP's mother, who passed recently. While she was trying to study, she found an old video of her mom and decided to play it, only to realize while it was playing that Dior was hiding in the curtains and listening.
Studying was officially over, even though it had barely started, and Dulce says that she resigned to spending the rest of the night comforting the cat with snuggle time. I hope they both got a treat after this, they deserve it!
Cats Remember Their Families Forever
Most people recognize that cats, even if they're a little bit intimidating, are highly intelligent animals. They understand a lot more than you might think they do; on several occasions, people have been sure there's something wrong with their cat... come to find out the kitty was simply ignoring them.
Cats may not completely understand the concept of death as humans do, but they understand that something is wrong. They will notice the absence of a person in their life, and they'll miss them, even if they don't know they've died. Cats do recognize the voices of their family members, though, so playing a video like this for them will trip them up a little bit.
Cats also have an excellent long-term memory: they can remember people for years, even after not seeing them for an extended period. In this case, Dior and her mom were incredibly close, so it makes sense that she'd miss her dearly. Positive experiences and a strong bond are one way to get a cat to commit you to long-term memory, while trauma and other issues are another.
No matter the case, if your cat is missing their parent and having a hard time, grace is key in making sure they settle in well. Playing videos like this for them may comfort some, but for others, it could make matters worse. Luckily, Dior seemed happy to hear her mom's voice again, even if she needed some snuggles after!
