English Cream Golden Retriever's Funny Way of Scoring a Treat Is Epic

What a smart fellow he is!

Dogs are a lot smarter than we give them credit for, especially when they want something involving food. Recently, a 4-year-old Golden Retriever named Bowie figured out the trick to obtaining treats and it's pretty genius.

On June 17, 2024, Bowie's humans (@nycgolden) shared the hilarious way he convinces Mom to reward him with treats for his good deed. Watch his master plan below!

"He wants to show me something," the writing on the clip begins. "Let's go and see what he's whining about." In the video captioned, "Someone messed with my bowls and therefore I deserve a treat," the seemingly upset Golden goes to Mom to tell her something's wrong. After a few barks and Mom asking what happened, the concerned pup lures her into the kitchen where the problem is revealed: Bowie's food bowl is turned upside down on top of his water—oh, the horror!

"Did he put his bowl like this intentionally so he could score a treat?" the writing continues. Mom makes it right while Bowie looks on, tail wagging because he did such a good job alerting her. She then asks if he wants a treat to which he politely lets out a small "woof" as if to say, "that was the whole point of this!"

Many chimed in to praise the good boy. "He is so sassy i love it," one person wrote. "He let u believe it was the food bowl but it was the treat. He led u to exactly the middle," another noted. "Bowie!! You are so tricky!" another added.

This dog obviously knows he's doing and deserves all the treats!

Do Dogs Know How To Trick You Into Giving Treats?

Anyone who's ever had a dog knows their intelligence is unmatched. If there's something they want, their smart thinking will figure out a way to get it. According to New Scientist, Christoph Völter at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in Austria ran tests in 96 trials and 48 dogs to judge dogs' intent when it comes to treat offerings.

It's no surprise dogs responded patiently, with more eye contact and wagging tails, to show that they know when you want to give them a treat even if you don't—a definite sign of learned behavior associated with reward—just like Bowie leading Mom to his bowl!

Whether your dog tricks you into giving him or her a treat or not, they probably deserve it just by bringing so much joy into you life. So go ahead—give them the treats!
