German Shepherd Deckhand's 'Morning Duties' Deserve an 'Employee of the Month' Award
Some pups are natural overachievers, and training them only makes them that much more impressive. This describes Bear the German Shepherd perfectly. Though he wasn't born knowing how to work a whale-watching boat, his eagerness and enthusiasm to learn the ropes (literally) make him the most valuable employee yet.

San Fransisco Whale Tours (@sfwhaketours) is lucky to have a hard worker like Bear. Not only does this German Shepherd know what he's doing, but he does it with pride. Among some of his duties, the talented pup can cast off the ropes to prepare for a voyage, catch the ropes needed to anchor the boat down, and he can even spot whales when the boat is out on the water to alert guests. He's an incredible example of what a dog can do when someone taps into their unique talents.

Bear is so beloved within his group of fellow employees, he's even made the "About Us" page where he's brimming with joy. This is one pup who's going places (literally...on the water!). Follow him on Instagram to keep up with his daily life!

German Shepherds Make Excellent Trainees
Though Bear is remarkable in his own right, this is a breed that is whip smart and make the best students. Dogster notes that German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) should begin training around 8 weeks of age, they're really good at learning new things at nearly any age. The site adds that the most crucial age during development is between 12-16 weeks old so they can decipher who's a threat and who isn't, but with the right training, they'll catch on even after that age.
Socialization is paramount to any dog's success in training or life in general, but it's a must for GSDs due to their protective and observant by nature. This could lead to them fiercely guarding their pack, which is great, but not so ideal when new faces come around.
By 3 months old, obedience training should be underway, with basic commands like sit, stay, heel, etc. Be sure to practice these commands daily. Consistency garners results, whether you have an 8 week old GSD or a 3 year old. And don't be fooled by "old dogs can't learn new tricks," because Bear is a prime example of how untrue that is.
