Working German Shorthaired Pointer and Sea Otters Share Unexpectedly Joyful Encounter at the Aquarium
It's not every day that a dog happens upon an Otter or the other way around, but that's what happened to a German Shorthaired Pointer and some Sea Otters.
On October 14, 2024, a K9 dog named Buda shared a video on social media of him meeting some Sea Otters while working. His reaction to the Otters is so cute, and so is theirs. Take a look!
In a short video shared on Instagram (@k9_buda), we meet Chief K9 Buda the German Shorthaired Pointer, who works with the United States Coast Guard's Explosive Detection Department in San Diego, California.
Buda walked into the aquarium with his partner and immediately went to the Otter exhibit. He was very curious about the little swimmers and put his nose right up to the viewing glass. The Otter took note, too. They started to swim over to Buda and pressed their noses against the glass.
Buda's tail started to wag so fast that he was clearly having a great time. The Otters appeared to as well, swimming and swirling and going back to the glass to greet the pup.
It really looks like they all became fast friends and if there wasn't the glass enclosure there, Buda would likely be in the water trying to swim like his new best friends.
"Land dog meets sea dog," the video's caption joked. And in the comments, people shared their thoughts on this unlikely but really adorable fast friendship.

Interesting Facts About the German Shorthaired Pointer
The German Shorthaired Pointer dog isn't heard as often as other dog breeds like German Shepherds or Golden Retrievers, especially as service dogs.
According to the American Kennel Club, the German Shorthaired Pointer is "friendly, smart, [and] willing to please," which are incredible characteristics for a service dog, so it all makes sense.
The organization shares, "The versatile, medium-sized German Shorthaired Pointer is an enthusiastic gundog of all trades who thrives on vigorous exercise, positive training, and a lot of love. "
"'Noble' and 'aristocratic' are words often used to describe the overall look," the club explains, adding that these dogs are very "trainable" and they bond quickly and firmly to their family.
"They are always up for physical activities like running, swimming, organized dog sports, in fact, anything that will burn some of their boundless energy while spending outdoors time with a human buddy."
