Key Points
- Vader, the Golden Retriever, joyfully chose and carried a small pumpkin at a patch.
- He proudly shows off items he treasures, like pumpkins and large sticks.
- Experts say Retrievers instinctively carry items due to their breeding and soft mouths.
The fall season is in full swing, which means everywhere you look, there are stunning fallen leaves all piled up, spooky decorations hanging from every front porch, and pumpkins galore. When the stress of life feels like too much, a trip to the pumpkin patch is just what the doctor ordered, sure to cure any weekday blues.
Vader the Golden Retriever recently did that, and his adorable choice is so on-brand for dogs everywhere—and he couldn’t be happier about it.

Vader, the “certified goofball”—as his TikTok bio says—had the best time at the pumpkin patch and made the cutest, most portable choice. Once you see the gourd this precious boy carries around, you’ll want to take your pup(s) to do the same.
Look at how happy the little pumpkin goblin is!
Mom noted in the caption that Vader is so proud of it, and you can see it all over his face. He wanted to show everyone at the patch his prized possession that he chose and that he is now responsible for. This good boy showing gratitude over something as simple as a pup-sized pumpkin is yet another example of why we’ll never deserve dogs!
It’s not just fall decor that the happy Golden Retriever loves carrying around. If he stumbles onto something worthy—like a gigantic stick—he’ll gladly tote it the whole mile walk home.
After going through all that work, Mom didn’t have the heart to make him leave it outside, so you can guess what happened next, and it’s the most wholesome scene.
I couldn’t take that stick away if my life depended on it. Without words, he promised to treasure that thing, and it’s exactly what he did. Is there anything more endearing than Vader proudly carrying things around (NO!)?
Why Dogs Love Carrying Things
If you’ve seen Vader toting around his tiny pumpkin, you can probably check off the very same for most dogs. As experts explain, carrying items in their mouths is instinctual, like when they’re nesting or resource guarding. Add to that a texture or scent they’re drawn to, and it’s a given they’re going to want to carry it.
Retrievers like Vader have even more of those instincts, since they were specifically bred with a “soft mouth” to retrieve without hurting it (like prey). And, by the looks of it, the proud pup was very careful with his pumpkin. His ancestors would be so proud!
