Labrador Retriever Mix Gives Musicians Sweet Kisses While Listening to Jazz for First Time
Music is such a huge part of the human experience that it's hard to imagine dogs not feeling the same way. Some of them just aren't that intrigued by it, but then there are those who really seem to allow the music to move them. Of course, they can't ever tell us in words what their favorite songs and artists are, but some pups genuinely do perk up or act differently when they hear a tune or genre of music that they really love.
For the Labrador Retriever mix in the TikTok video below, that genre is jazz. While he has always been a big fan of music in general, it seems like this might be his new favorite — especially since he had the opportunity to hear it live for the first time.
In this video they shared on Wednesday, October 23, the humans behind @billythetalkingpuppy explained that their Labrador Retriever mix Billy has grown up around classical music at home, so that's always been what he gravitated toward (and even requests his parents play for him). But what's life without enjoying multiple types of music?
"We invited a jazz band over to expand Billy's musical horizons!" his mom wrote, and it certainly seems to have worked.
Billy was immediately curious about the instruments, smelling them and checking them out, and even gave the musicians kisses. He's such a sweetheart!
By the end of the video, he made himself comfy in the center of it all, and you can tell he's very focused on the music. This is one cultured pup, and he's so lucky to have an opportunity like this.
What Genres of Music Do Dogs Like Most?
It seems like Billy's original love of classical music was right on the money, because according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), that's the genre of music that dogs respond to most.
The site pointed out that psychologist Deborah Wells performed a study in Belfast where she examined how shelter dogs responded to classical music, pop music, and heavy metal, and she did notice that the music had an influence on the dogs' moods.
“Classical music, for example, can help to reduce levels of stress, whilst grunge music can promote hostility, sadness, tension, and fatigue," Wells said.
Knowing that dogs can have musical preferences based on how it makes them feel is a good reminder that they're not so different from us humans after all.
It seems like Billy may have picked his favorite kind of music, and it seems to suit him just fine. He's a very classy dog!
