Michigan Firefighters Rescue Small Kitten Found Stuck in Car Muffler

Oh, sweet little thing.

A local Firefighter group thankfully rescued a sweet kitten after it was found in a terrible situation that could have ended so badly.

On July 17, 2024, the Howell Area Fire Department in Michigan shared the story on social media, and it ended well. Take a look!

According to People, the Howell Area Fire Department shared a video of a kitten rescued after getting stuck in a vehicle muffler.

People reports that the department shared in the post, "On occasion, the emergency call comes to the station... This afternoon, our crew was brought a kitten with its head stuck in a muffler!"

The tiny orange kitten was stuck and thankfully found just in time. The video shows the firefighters taking great care to safely remove pieces away from the muffler so there is enough room to remove the cat gently.

It wasn't clear at first if their approach was going to work, but thankfully, after some time working and doing what they could to keep the kitten as calm as possible, they were successful.

"Petting the kitten to keep it calm, the crew slowly and gently pulls the tiny cat out of the muffler," the news reports.

The fire crew was relieved when the kitten's head popped out from the muffler, allowing them to remove the kitten fully.

"The feline emerges from the muffler with its ears and neck covered with grease and oil," People wrote.

"There you go, buddy!" the fire crew cheered as the kitten emerged.

In an update, according to People, the Howell Area Fire Department shared a photo of the kitten safely placed in a carrier and taken to get a health check.

"The kitten was left with needing a good home remedy for those hard-to-clean ring around the collar stains before heading home," the department wrote in its Facebook post's caption.

"The muffler just needs a little straightening and clamp. Both are in good condition, spoken for and headed back to the barn."

What Should You Do If You Find an Injured Stray Cat?

According to Alley Cat Allies, if you come across a stray cat injured, the best course of action is to try and get them access to help. In the case of the kitten stuck in the muffler, calling the local fire department was a great course of action since they could work carefully and together to ensure the cat didn't get further injured.

"Prior to taking any action, contact your chosen veterinarian and describe the cat’s condition,' the organization suggests. "If you can, share photos or videos of the cat. For community cats with mild issues, it may be best to allow them to heal in their outdoor home rather than trapping them."

The organization reminds readers that this can be really stressful for stray cats and to keep that in mind.

"Remember that trapping is stressful for community cats and should only be done out of necessity, such as for spay and neuter or to treat more serious injuries or illnesses."
