San Diego Humane Society's State-of-the-Art Habitats Are a True Game-Changer
Visiting an animal shelter is a wonderful thing to do — whether you're volunteering with the animals or planning to adopt one to take home — but at the same time, it can be really heartbreaking. Not only is it a reminder of just how many homeless animals there are in your community, let alone the world, but not every shelter is created equally. Some are understaffed and underfunded, leading animals to live in a less than desirable environment... and no matter how you slice it, not even the nicest shelter in the world is going to be the same as living in a home with a family and a warm bed.
Knowing this, one humane society is going above and beyond to make the time that animals are in the shelter as pleasant as they can possibly be, and this is such a game changer for the dogs who are staying there that I am really hoping it catches on more widely soon.
On Monday, February 26, the San Diego Humane Society shared a TikTok video of their new habitats, and whoa — these aren't the the bleak, concrete enclosures we're used to seeing at animal shelters.
"POV: your shelter has sound-proofed, angled habitats so no dogs have direct views of each other and can fully relax," says the video.
This way, each dog has their privacy, and after taking a peek into the habitats, while small, it seems like they have plenty of room to move around. I also noticed that each dog also has their own cozy bed, blanket, and toys to play with — all things that go a very long way in making their stay as comfortable as possible.
More About the San Diego Humane Society
The San Diego Humane Society has done some amazing work, even without even counting these new doggie habitats.
According to their website, the organization has been able to find homes for 29,474 animals and been able to provide care for 12,612 wild animals on top of that, which is a truly impressive feat.
If you live in the San Diego area and want to volunteer, you can see the volunteer opportunities here. And if you're looking to adopt, the website also allows you to view the pets who are looking for homes and find out more about the process, which will start when you visit in person during adoption hours.
These dogs aren't lucky to still be looking for homes, but they are lucky to have been brought to such a comfy shelter filled with such caring people. Fingers crossed they all find their forever homes quickly!
