Senior Labrador's Final 'Date' With Mom Ends with One Last Cheese Tax
Saying goodbye to our pets is always hard, no matter the circumstances. It's unfortunate, but euthanasia is rarely without reason; it's better to let them go than to keep them here in pain. Every pet parent knows that, and yet, it's still hard every single time.
For one senior Labrador Retriever, his family knew when his last day would be, and they made sure it was as special as it could be. On Sunday, June 23rd, his mom shared the footage of when she took him on one last date, and she finally managed to "pay off" her cheese tax:
Zeus and Root were the sweetest pair. Now, Root will have to eat double the cheese, and I know she'll miss her dad forever.
Zeus was 16 years old. For a Labrador Retriever, that's typically about as old as they can get; he was well-cared for, well-loved, and a very happy boy. He had a daughter, Root, who's only 3. He passed on June 10th, and since then, she's been sharing Zeus content from the drafts for all 51,000 followers who loved him to enjoy.
Before he passed, his mom made sure they did everything they could together including camping, kayaking, and on their last family vacation. His last day was full as just as much love as every other day, and there were lots of "bad" treats involved. He loved it.
How to Make Sure Your Dog Has a Good Last Day
If you've just gotten the confirmation that your dog has an official date of euthanasia, there will be a lot of feelings. Even though they're still here, you'll begin grieving, and it might make you want to just lie around sadly. In many cases, taking it easy is exactly what an old dog wants, but there are a few special things you can do in the days leading up to their last:
- Bring them around to all of their favorite places.
- Let them pick out a new toy.
- Spoil them with their favorite treats, even if it's not the healthiest.
- Make sure they're not overexerting themselves, though, to save them from any extra pain.
A lot of the time, the only thing your senior dog is really going to want is you. As long as you stay with them, they'll be happy. Any extra treats, toys, or experiences are just a bonus. Zeus will be so missed, but he was also very loved!
