Ducks Taking Care of Special Needs Sibling on Their Walk Home Is Everything

They're protecting her!

Animals often exhibit their inherent kindness in the most adorable ways. We do not teach them to be patient or protective, it’s simply part of their nature. We might expect it from dogs, but this can even be true of birds.

TikTok user @myprideandducks shared the sweetest clip on Sunday, August 6th, which shows how her little flock takes care of their own. Humans could learn a thing or two from these ladies.

How sweet is this? She explains that every afternoon her three ducks will quack at her from the pond, to let her know it’s time to begin their journey back to the barn. However, for the past few days, they have stopped quaking and started walking back quietly. Sadly, one duck is special needs and requires assistance to get home. As she runs out to help, her duck, Henrietta, greets her first. Not far behind are Gertrude and Cleo, and Cleo needs to be off her feet as much as possible. She tells her, “Pick up,” and she allows herself to be lifted and carried in Mom’s arms.

Once they know Cleo is safe, Gertrude and Henrietta run quickly ahead. Even mom is having a hard time keeping up with these spunky girls who she tells us have a dog-like energy. How adorable! Once they return to the barn, she feeds them their dinner, and they feast like queens after a hard day of swimming. After seeing the video, she comments Cleo was walking between the other two, which she hadn’t realized before. They ensured her safety by keeping her in the middle and moving slowly. What lovely girls!

In the commons, a viewer asked why these ducks didn’t fly home. She tells us that’s because they are Pekin ducks, and they originally bred these birds for meat. Making most much too heavy to fly with their small wings. You may be familiar with the character Donald Duck, who also is a Pekin. In fact, it’s the most popular breed in the US.

Now that we know how social these ducks can be, it makes Donald’s classic character even more understandable. They must make a truly joyful addition to any farm.
