These Are the Most Popular Names for Dogs and Cats

Adobe Photos

What inspired your pet's name? Was it pop culture? Or, like me, did you adopt a pet and just kept the name the animal came with? That's been the case with all of the dogs we've adopted. Our two current dogs are named Oscar and Sadie.

It's always fun to look at popular pet names, like baby names, and see how they change over time. Not surprisingly, pet-oriented companies usually do an end-of-year roundup of popular pet names.

In fact, at the end of 2018, I heard from three such companies with their own list of the most popular pet names from 2018. Two of these companies provide pet insurance or pet health services (Healthy Paws Pet Insurance and Banfield Pet Hospital). The third is dog-walking app Rover.

Healthy Paws says it collected its data from a database of more than 380,000 pets. Banfield said it came up with these popular names from its database of more than 2.5 million dogs and 500,000 cats cared for at its hospitals in the past year. In this blog post, Rover describes where it got its results:

"As the world’s largest network of pet sitters and dog walkers, and a leading dog name expert, we can’t wait each year to dig into our database of over a million dogs to determine which dog names are leading the pack."

Pop culture's effect on pet names

It's also fun to find out how much pop culture affects what we name our pets. For example, consider these findings from Banfield Pet Hospital:

  • Black Panther took over the box office this year (congrats on the Oscar nominations!) and may have captured pet owners’ hearts: Pets named Nakia, Okoye and Shuri quadrupled since 2017.
  • Pet parents may be drawing inspiration from The Avengers: 66 percent more cats and 37 percent more dogs were named Iron Man, while 30 percent more dogs were named Star Lord.
  • Star Wars continues to be a force among pet owners, and with Solo: A Star Wars Story premiering last year, related names continue to rise through the ranks. Eleven percent more cats were named Han Solo this year, while 31 percent more cats and 15 percent more dogs were named Lando.
  • The award-winning Netflix show Stranger Things appears to have resonated with cat owners, as 39 percent more cats were named Eleven this year.
  • Team Cardi B or Nicki Minaj? The jury’s in. Cardi B is the winner among dog and cat owners, with six times the number of cats and three times the number of dogs named after a celeb.
  • Although they’ve seen a decline since 2017, This Is Us-inspired names continue to be popular among cat owners, with Jack and Milo in the top 20 cat names this year.

Rover had its own take on the powerful influence of pop culture on pet names:

  • Cardi rose more than 1,000 percent
  • Nakia of Black Panther is up 560 percent
  • Gambino rose 190 percent
  • Stormi (daughter of Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott) increased 240 percent

Pop culture influences aside, I've compiled the top pet names from those three sources. Since Rover and Healthy Paws did top 10 dog names for females and males, I've listed those findings side by side to start things off. Next is the top names overall from Banfield. After that are the cat name findings from Healthy Paws and Banfield.

I have to admit that it was fun to see my pup Sadie's name show up on all of these lists, especially since we adopted her five years ago. I had no idea how popular her name was among dog lovers and for so long.
