Village in England Where Ponies Run Free Is Like Something Out of a Fairytale

This is so lovely!

When I was young, my family often visited the Outer Banks of North Carolina for summer vacation. There, the sight of wild horses running free was common, especially at sunrise or sunset. This unique sight, one of the most beautiful on America’s East Coast, has always been one of my favorite places to be.

Across the pond in Dartmoor, Devon, UK, there is also a village where ponies have been free to roam for over 3500 years. Here, you’ll see these majestic creatures not only running through the hills of the countryside, but you might also find them in the middle of town. It’s a sight to behold, to say the least.

Take a look at these fantastic views in a video from @ukhiddengems shared on May 22:

If you are an animal lover and plan to visit England, this is a must-see stop. This gorgeous footage from traveler @sarah.k.hagan makes me want to book my flight today! If this rugged English countryside and its legends weren’t enough reason to visit, these wild ponies are. It’s hard to imagine anything more beautiful than the sound of hooves clattering down a cobblestone street in an ancient village. However, they are just as incredible to witness grazing in the vast countryside. It’s like a scene right out of a novel.

The Ponies of Dartmoor, Devon, UK

According to Visit Dartmoor, it is believed that in the 1950s, over 30,000 Dartmoor ponies roamed freely across the Moorland. Today, it is estimated that only 1500 remain. This has prompted conservation efforts to preserve these ancient pedigrees. While these ponies can traverse this lush land as they wish, local farmers ensure they receive the healthcare they need to thrive. These beautiful creatures also play a vital role in maintaining a healthy habitat for various wildlife by grazing across the moor. If you plan a visit to this area, feeding them or getting too close is not recommended, as human food can be harmful, and these animals are not domesticated.

People expressed their affection for this beautiful place. Viewer @bylaurieb responded, “Ponies, donkeys, cows, and pigs all roam freely through the villages of the New Forest; they even have the right of way.” As they should! Viewer @amanda___photographer remarked, “Soul enriching to experience places in the world who value animals like they should be valued and respected. I loved visiting here a few years ago, which was and is a highlight of my life.” It’s easy to see why.

With the hustle and bustle of American life, it can be hard even to imagine a place like this. However, there’s no doubt that seeing these incredible animals is a way to nourish the heart and soul.
