Yorkie's Sadness Over Dad Leaving for Business Trip Brings All the Feels

Poor Luna misses him so much!

For a lot of people, going on business trips where you'll be away from home for a few days is just part of the gig. But one little dog doesn't care if that's true for her dad because she gets so sad when he leaves. And with her face, it has to be hard for him to be away from her, too.

On October 26, 2024, TikTok user Luna the Yorkie Girl (@lunatheyorkiegirl) shared a video of her mom comforting her when her dad left for work, and it's really sad but also incredibly cute. Take a look!

The first thing we notice with the video right away is how sweet and tiny Luna, a little Yorkie, is. She's curled into her mom's lap, comforting her because she's very upset that her "daddy left for a business trip."

Luna's mom is trying to help her feel better. She's giving cuddles and kisses and doing what she can to raise Luna's spirits. But this tiny Yorkie's eyes are impossible to ignore. She looks so sad, and she's definitely perfected the "puppy eye" look.

The video shares a few sentences that Luna is probably thinking. While sad, she seems to have two very loving parents: her mom, who is giving her extra cuddles, and her dad, who she seems to be very lovingly attached to.

The comments on the video are all trying to help Luna feel better, too (see, those puppy eyes do work!). One person wrote, "This was my yorkie at the weekend. He stayed with my auntie while I had a night away. He didn’t eat or sleep. Neither did I," while another commented, "Don't you ever leave this baby alone again, dad."

How to Help Your Dog Through Separation Anxiety

If your dog gets nervous or really sad when you leave the house or becomes inconsolable when you leave them with someone else, it could have separation anxiety, which can be a real challenge for pet parents.

According to 24Petwatch Canada, separation anxiety in dogs is described as being an "extreme fear of being alone that’s triggered when a pet parent or caregiver leaves and the dog thinks they’ve been abandoned."

The site explains that there are several levels of anxiety, which is more of a spectrum, and it can be really hard for families. "At the extreme end, dogs with severe separation anxiety may destroy crates, chew at door frames, and even break windows to try and get out of the house to find their family," the site explains.

If your dog struggles with separation anxiety, the best thing you can do is address that problem early, 24Petwatch suggests. This means having a conversation with your veterinarian and taking steps to help ease that fear, ideally before it becomes an extreme issue.

According to WebMD, if the problem is "mild," you can help ease that anxiety by giving your pup someone close who "smells like you" or ignoring your pup when you first get home to keep your coming home and leaving more "low-key."

If your dog is dealing with a more serious or extreme version of separation anxiety where those mild ways to help aren't enough, the best thing to do is go slowly.

"They may start to get nervous when they see signs you're about to leave, like putting on your shoes or picking up your keys," WebMD shares. "So do those things, but then don't leave. Put on your shoes and then sit down at the table. Pick up your keys and watch TV. Do this over and over many times a day."

And, of course, check in with your veterinarian for more tips and tricks on easing separation anxiety that are more specific to your dog.
